Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Grateful Dead, 1974 Compilation (Part 2 of 4)

….to honor the 40th anniversary of the Grateful Dead's gig from Fresno, CA, we present Steel Cut Oats, Volume 11, Part 2 of 4.

Since July of 2013, I’ve been combing through the Grateful Dead’s performances from 1974. This is the second of a four part series, the others will arrive in late summer and into the fall. Below are links to a 72 minute sampler, and the second installment. The final product will be four six-hour compilations touching on all facets – classic jams, audience recordings, overlooked gems, sound checks, etc. – while still sensitive to officially released material.

Part II consists of many intriguing jam segments. I’d like to bring particular attention to the sequence from October 16th – a show that is loaded full of improvisational payout. Phil’s bass strings – as he explains in The Grateful Dead Movie - are allocated to different channels…..you'll hear specific strings on the left channel with others residing on the right. It’s a pretty cool effect that was only captured to tape correctly a few times during ’74. Of course, no set celebrating the Wall Of Sound would be complete without the “Boston ’74 Jam” – 30 minutes of all-time peak Grateful Dead captured by the late, great taper extradonare Jerry Moore.

Several tracks from the Vancouver show are showcased here – what I consider to be the best front-to-back show from the month of May. I was disappointed with the recent Missoula choice as an official release, and as I checked back through my notes, only one or two tracks would have been selected for use beyond the Dark Star portion of the show.

Part II also treats the listener to double shots of ’74 classics – Playin’ In the Band (Vancouver/Fresno), Eyes Of The World (Winterland #2/Vancouver), and U.S. Blues (Vancouver/Providence). Considering the depth of Providence's second frame (Dick's Picks #12, Disc I), it’s interesting to note that Candelario’s board mix is rather skeevy to open the set. This U.S. Blues is culled from a matrix to balance out Kidd's anomalies, and as it evens, listen for an all-out celebratory solo from Garcia. Summer '74 encapsulated. A day later, "From the Mars Hotel" was released.

Sequencing is underway for Part III – expect heavy emphasis on the 2nd Miami show (what I feel is their best performance of the year), the September/European tour, and another excellent audience tape showcasing the jam segment from the Reno show. For now, enjoy Part II.
